Most people checking epoxy floor paint prices have a dusty garage, a worn stoep or a workshop floor that stains with oil. Floor coatings come in two broad kinds: single-pack floor paint for light foot traffic and stoeps, and two-part epoxy that cures hard enough for cars, trolleys and forklifts. The coating is only as good as the concrete under it, so moisture and preparation matter more than the colour. Describe the floor and suppliers near you quote on floor paint, epoxy kits and primers. The request is free with no obligation.
Floor paint or two-part epoxy
- Single-pack floor paint (often acrylic or alkyd) suits stoeps, patios, paving and light garage use. It is easy to apply and recoat.
- Two-part epoxy mixes a resin and a hardener. It cures into a hard, chemical-resistant layer for garages, workshops, warehouses and food areas.
- Anti-slip additives, such as a fine aggregate mixed in or scattered on the wet coat, are worth adding on stoeps, ramps and wet areas.
Preparing the concrete
New slabs must cure first; ask the supplier how long. Test old slabs for moisture: tape a square of plastic sheet to the floor for a day or two, and if it is damp underneath, rising moisture can lift the coating. Degrease oil stains, then open the surface: acid etching for light jobs, or mechanical grinding for warehouses and smooth power-floated slabs. Vacuum all dust, fill cracks and holes, and apply the primer the system calls for.
Mixing and pot life
Mix two-part epoxy exactly in the ratio stated, with a paddle on a slow drill, for the time on the tin. Once mixed, it has a limited pot life, often shorter in hot weather, so mix only what you can lay before it thickens. Pour it out into a strip rather than leaving it in the tin, where it heats and sets faster. Ventilate well and wear gloves and eye protection. On large floors, compare a commercial painting contractor quote.
What it costs
Suppliers quote floor paint and two-part epoxy floor kits at about R1,090 to R1,880 for 5 L, depending on the grade and type. Coverage per litre is on the data sheet and drops on rough or porous concrete, so work from the floor area. Add primer, anti-slip additive, etching or grinding, rollers and painting supplies to the list. If a stoep or slab lets water into rooms below, deal with that first; see waterproof paint.
