Painters and suppliers on our network work in all nine provinces, from Highveld suburbs that take hail and hard sun to the humid KZN coast, Cape Town's winter rain and south-easter, the Garden Route's damp, Karoo and Northern Cape heat, and mining and farming towns with red dust and big tin roofs. Choose your province or town to read what the weather does to paint there and request quotes.

Gauteng

Gauteng has the largest and most varied building stock in the country, and nearly all of it sits high on the Highveld. Strong UV fades dark colours and chalks old acrylics on north and west walls, summer storms bring hail that dents and strips roof coatings, and lightning season tests every gutter and flat roof. Face brick homes from the 1960s and 1970s, plastered townhouses in sectional title complexes, older stone and tin roof houses in Pretoria, township homes and new estates on the edges of the metros all need different preparation. Body corporates, landlords, shop owners and factory managers ask for painters as often as homeowners do, and paint shops are close by in most suburbs.

Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga splits into two painting climates. On the Highveld around eMalahleni, Middelburg, Secunda and Ermelo, frosty dry winters, harsh summer sun and hail storms work on face brick homes, mine and power station housing and big industrial sheds, and fine coal dust can settle on walls and roofs. Down the escarpment in Mbombela, White River and Hazyview, heat and humidity bring mould to south walls and eaves, and thatch, timber and plastered lodges need regular care. Farmhouses, fruit packhouses and holiday homes add their own work. Homeowners, lodge owners, mines and farmers all ask for painters, and most paint and supplies come through the bigger towns.

North West

North West is a province of platinum mining towns, maize and cattle farms and weekend homes around Hartbeespoort Dam. Rustenburg, Brits and Klerksdorp have large numbers of face brick homes, mine housing and steel sheds, and red dust from mining and dry winters stains light coloured walls. Potchefstroom has older houses and university buildings, Mahikeng has government offices and long established neighbourhoods, and farms across the west have corrugated roofs, silos and outbuildings that rust if they are left. Hot summers, strong sun and hail storms are hard on paint, and cold winter nights bring frost. Homeowners, farmers, mines and landlords renting to mine workers are the main clients.

Limpopo

Limpopo is hot for much of the year, and that heat shapes most painting jobs. Polokwane and Mokopane sit on a drier plateau with sharp winter mornings, while Tzaneen, Thohoyandou and the Letaba valley are humid and green, with heavy summer rain and mould on shaded walls. Lephalale has power station housing and newer suburbs, and Phalaborwa and Hoedspruit mix mine homes, game lodges and thatch. Many homes are plastered and painted in warm colours, while in rural villages new block houses often wait for their first coat. Farmers with packhouses, schools and churches, lodge owners and homeowners all ask for painters and paint.

Northern Cape

The Northern Cape is the largest province and one of the driest, and its sun and temperature swings are hard on paint. Summer days around Upington and Kakamas are very hot, winter nights in De Aar and the Karoo towns can freeze, and walls that expand and contract between the two open hairline cracks. Kimberley has Victorian houses with tin roofs and broekie lace from its diamond rush days, mining towns such as Kathu and Postmasburg have newer homes and red iron ore dust, and Namaqualand towns like Springbok have flat roofed houses in a dry, windy landscape. Distances are long, so homeowners, farmers, mines and municipalities plan painting work carefully.

Free State

The Free State is known for its sandstone. Old public buildings in Bloemfontein, many homes in the eastern towns of Bethlehem, Ficksburg and Clarens and plenty of farmhouses are built with it, and painting near it needs care, because sandstone is usually best left unpainted or treated only with breathable products. Elsewhere the stock is face brick and plastered homes, mining town housing around Welkom and Virginia, and industrial plants in Sasolburg. Winters are cold with hard frost, summers bring storms and hail, and dry spring winds carry dust. Homeowners, landlords near the goldfields, farmers with sheds and silos, and municipalities and schools ask for painters and paint.

KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal is the province where mould is the first thing a painter checks. Along the coast from Port Shepstone through Durban to Ballito and Richards Bay, humid air, warm nights and salt spray feed black mould on south walls, rust on burglar bars and gutters and peeling on cheap exterior paint. Plastered homes, sectional title complexes in Umhlanga and on the Berea, older timber and tin homes and new North Coast estates all need a thorough wash first. Inland, Pietermaritzburg has Victorian red brick buildings and misty winters, and the Midlands and northern areas around Newcastle see frost and storms. Homeowners, body corporates, holiday home owners and factories all ask for painters.

Eastern Cape

The Eastern Cape has some of the oldest buildings in the country and some of its windiest coastline. Settler cottages and churches in Makhanda and Port Alfred, Karoo townhouses in Graaff-Reinet and older homes in Gqeberha's Central and Walmer often carry many old layers of paint that need careful preparation. Along the coast from Jeffreys Bay to East London, salt wind and rain attack walls and steel, and Gqeberha's strong winds dry paint fast and blow grit onto wet coats. Inland, the Karoo is hot and dry with winter frost, and around Mthatha there are many rural homes, schools and clinics. Homeowners, landlords, factories and public buildings drive demand.

Western Cape

The Western Cape paints to a winter rainfall calendar. In Cape Town and the Boland, wet winters drive rain into cracked plaster and through flat roofs, and the summer south-easter dries paint fast and carries dust and salt. Housing ranges from Cape Dutch homesteads in Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek to Victorian terraces in Woodstock and Observatory, face brick homes in the northern suburbs, complexes and estates around Durbanville and Somerset West, and large township areas on the Cape Flats. On the Garden Route around George and Knysna, rain falls in most months and mould is common. Homeowners, body corporates, wine farms and holiday home owners all request painters.
