Anyone searching for a painters store near me usually needs more than paint. Most of a good paint job is preparation, and that means masking tape, drop sheets, fillers, sandpaper, sugar soap, mould wash, a safe ladder and protective gear. Buying the right grade of each saves time and repairs: cheap tape bleeds or tears, the wrong filler cracks again, and a thin drop sheet lets paint through. Send one list and suppliers near you quote on all of it. It is free and there is no obligation.

Masking tape and drop sheets

  • General masking tape is fine for holding plastic and quick jobs, but can leave residue if left too long.
  • Painters tape (low-tack, often blue or purple) gives sharper lines and peels clean from fresh paint and delicate surfaces.
  • Exterior tape resists sun and moisture outside.

Pull tape while the last coat is still slightly soft, at a low angle, to avoid tearing the paint film. Use canvas drop sheets on floors (they do not slip) and plastic sheeting over furniture and for spray work.

Fillers, sanding and cleaning

Use a fine ready-mixed filler for hairline cracks and nail holes, and a powder or exterior crack filler for wider cracks. Raked-out cracks that keep moving need a flexible acrylic filler or sealant. Large or growing cracks may be structural: get them checked before you fill. Sand with coarse grits (around 60 to 80) to remove loose paint, medium (120) for smoothing filler and fine (180 to 240) between coats. Wash walls with sugar soap, and kill mould with a mould wash before painting.

Ladders and protective gear

Use a stepladder for rooms, an extension ladder for gutters and a pair of trestles with a plank for ceilings and long walls. Check the feet and locks, set ladders on firm ground at a safe angle and do not over-reach; move the ladder instead. For double-storey walls, hire scaffolding. For protection, have goggles, gloves, a dust mask for sanding and a respirator for spraying or solvent-based paint, along with good brushes and rollers.

What it costs

Suppliers quote masking tape at about R20 to R80 a roll, drop sheets at about R20 to R540 and crack filler at about R25 to R420, depending on size and grade. Sandpaper, sugar soap and mould wash are cheap per item but add up on a big job. A good canvas drop sheet and a sturdy ladder last for years, so it pays to buy those in a better grade. Put everything on one list with your paint, so paint shops can quote the full job.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between masking tape and painters tape?
Ordinary masking tape has a stronger adhesive that can lift fresh paint or leave sticky residue if left on for days. Painters tape has a low-tack adhesive designed to come off cleanly and give a sharper edge. Use painters tape for lines on walls and trims, and general masking tape for holding plastic sheeting.
When should I pull off painters tape?
Pull it soon after the final coat, while the paint is still slightly soft, or as the tape's instructions say. Pull slowly at a low angle, back over itself. If the paint has fully hardened, run a sharp knife along the edge first so the film does not tear off with the tape.
What filler should I use for cracks in plaster?
Hairline cracks and nail holes take a fine ready-mixed filler. Wider cracks should be opened slightly with a scraper and filled with a powder or exterior crack filler. Cracks that open and close with heat need a flexible filler. Wide cracks that keep growing can point to a structural problem: have them checked first.
Can I get one quote for all my painting supplies?
Yes. List the tape, sheets, fillers, sandpaper, cleaners, ladders and PPE you need, with your paint if you like. WallPaint.co.za is a free quote request service: suppliers and paint shops near you reply with prices on the whole list, so you compare one total instead of shopping item by item.
